Wilfred R. “Possum” DeHart, 89, native of Theriot, LA, and resident of Raceland, LA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Possum is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice Wolf DeHart; his children, Melanie (Ronald) Gros, Lance (Deedee) DeHart, and Lacey (Timmy) Adams; his 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Possum was preceded in death by his daughter, Arlene Dehart; his parents, Adam and Ida DeHart; and his 14 siblings, Easton, Floyd, Gardener “Leigh”, Edmund, Cyrus, Houston, Thomas, Herbert, Charles, Hilary “Toussant”, Lawrence, Willard, Estelle Voisin, and Nora Lovell.
Mr. Wilfred was a founding member of United Diesel and co-owner of several other businesses. Most recently, he was involved with Gulf Coast Manufacturing, Fleet Supply Warehouse, and their subsidiaries.
He was a proud member of the Krewe of Terreanians for more than 50 years and served as King Terre XLI.
Possum was dedicated to God and his family. He enjoyed celebrating every occasion with his family and friends. He was the ultimate entertainer, always willing to share stories of his multiple adventures. He loved to fish and enjoyed cooking and feeding people. He was strong in his faith and shared his loved for Jesus with anyone who would listen.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, May 8, 2026, at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church, located at 333 Twin Oaks Dr, Raceland, LA 70394, from 8:30 AM until the service time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM with burial following at St. Mary’s Nativity Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Possum’s family request donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Shriners Hospital for Children.
