Truman Causey

August 3, 1909 — November 15, 1942

Emblem

Truman George Causey, who was a prisoner of war during World War II, will finally return home to Louisiana after more than 80 years. His long-awaited journey home concludes a lifetime of sacrifice and a promise kept to his family for decades. Born in Port Vincent, Louisiana on August 3, 1909, to George Columbus Causey and Annie Broussard Causey, Truman was the oldest of 5 children. He was known for his humble and kind spirit and his love for his family. He first enlisted in the US Army Air Corps at the age of 16. During his service, Truman was a Technical Sergeant assigned to the 17th Bombardment Squadron within the 27th Bombardment Group when he deployed to the Philippine Islands. He fought bravely against Japanese enemy forces before being captured and held as a prisoner of war in December 1941. This was the same month and year that his youngest child was born. Truman survived the 65-mile brutal Bataan Death March in April 1942, only to perish from malnutrition and disease on November 15, 1942. At the age of 33 he died while in captivity at the Cabanatuan Japanese Prison Camp along with over 2500 other prisoners of war. His remains were buried in a common grave alongside fellow soldiers until the unidentifiable remains from the grave were reburied in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines. His remains were disinterred in 2018 for laboratory analysis by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). Through modern scientific advancements, including DNA and anthropological isotope analysis, the agency positively identified Truman’s remains, bringing closure to his family that had never lost hope. His family expresses deep gratitude to the DPAA for their tireless work in fulfilling the nation’s promise to its heroes. While he never returned home alive, Truman’s final homecoming is a testament to his enduring legacy of service and courage. His service and valor earned him a Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and many other military honors. Truman’s youngest daughter, Shearon, received the call that she had hoped and prayed for her entire life from DPAA on April 7, 2025, informing her that his remains were positively identified at the Hickam Lab in Honolulu, Hawaii, and would be flown home for burial. Truman was survived by his mother Annie Broussard Causey (deceased Mar 1962), wife Leola Lucille Hill Causey (deceased Dec 1994), son Truman George Causey Jr. (age 88), daughter Shearon Causey Guidry (age 83), daughter Kay Francis Causey Duggan (deceased Jan 2009), 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father George Columbus Causey (deceased Feb 1937).
