Raymond A. Birdsall, Sr., 92, a native and resident of Lockport, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Holy Savior Catholic Church, Lockport, LA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 pm Saturday with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Beloved husband of Marion Adams Birdsall for 70 years; loving father of Paula Callais (Wayne), Raymond Birdsall, Jr., Joan Birdsall, Randy Birdsall, Phyllis Chiasson (Robert) and Julie Carriere (Herbert); sister of Jeanne Blanchard; brother of Walter Birdsall, Sr.; grandfather of, Joshua, Jacob and Jordan Callais, Ray Birdsall, Michelle Domangue, Heidi Wimberly, Lesley Green, Jessica Plummer, Mark, Andrew and Jill Carriere and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Elizabeth Birdsall; siblings, Gertrude Beebe, Joseph Birdsall, Jr., Elizabeth Pruitt, Helen Birdsall and grandson, Hilton Anselmi, Jr.
Raymond was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Holy Name Society. He was a graduate of Holy Savior High School in 1943 and joined the United States Navy, also in 1943. He is a World War II veteran who served on the USS Batfish, which is primarily known for the remarkable feat of sinking three Imperial Japanese Navy submarines in a 76 hour period in February of 1945. He has attended USS Batfish reunions since 1985 in Muskogee, OK. He is a retired barber of 49 ½ years and as a bus driver with Lafourche Parish School for 18 ½ years.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Holy Savior Catholic School or the USS Batfish at the Muskogee War Memorial Park.
