Raleigh Dominic Pitre, better known as Bosco, was born in Golden Meadow on December 20, 1935. He passed away peacefully at 89, on May 27, 2025.
He is married to Lois Catherine Callais for 69 loving years. He is survived by his devoted wife Lois and their 6 children: Donna Carpenter (Richard), Marty Pitre (Laura), Jody Pitre (Monique), Mitchell Pitre (Nikki), Angie Cooper, and Misty Guidry (Joseph); 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ortis and Maggie Pitre, in-laws Sidney and Virgie Callais, grandchildren Bryce Esponge, and Francis Pitre, and great-granddaughter Celia Pitre.
Bosco grew up in Westwego and moved back to Cut Off at the age of 15. He dropped out of school in the 7th grade to help support his family. He never learned to read since he was mainly focused on making cast nets in the back of the classroom. He once swam across the bayou to see the woman of his dreams. They would go to the drive in, dance every weekend, attend fairs, and go roller skating at the Raceland Skating Rink. They both loved dancing.
Bosco was a story teller who loved to tell jokes and make others laugh. He grew up speaking English and French. He went to work with his parents at Ed Martin’s Packing Company in Westwego until he moved down the bayou where he lived with family. He worked many odd jobs, one of which included working at Little Eagle washing cars. He eventually got a job in the oil field working as a derrick man then on inshore rigs working 7 and 7. He operated a drag line for Texas Gulf Sulphur Mine. He left and found work at E&L Enterprises. He later went to work at a shipyard where he taught himself how to weld eventually gaining certification. Eventually he bought a welding truck and began working as an independent contractor on the side while still working full time as a welder at a shipyard. To supplement his income in the winter, he would put out garfish lines in order to ensure a continuous income. He was the first in his area to weld aluminum from his truck. He built an aluminum boat for a supply boat company, as well as many pilot houses for tug boats. Some of his welding creations will remain in our community for years to come.
In his retirement, he enjoyed cutting grass with his son, Mitch, to keep himself busy. He took great pride in any work that he did. He continued to work into his mid 80's. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing. You could often find him singing his own lyrics to his favorite songs. His family was his greatest pride and joy. He will be loved and deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him.
