Mercedes V. Plaisance

Mercedes Marie Vega Plaisance, 88, a native and resident of Cut Off passed away peacefully with her family on Sunday, March 22, 2026.

Mrs. Mercedes is survived by her children: Cindy L. Collins (Dr. Gregory), Pamela P. Smith, Shelly P. Sketchler (Dr. Jeffrey), and Tracy L. Bourgeois (Barry); grandchildren: Tyrus Smith (Beth), Marc Sketchler (Amber), Morgan Smith (Dante), Adrienne Evans (Stephen), Dr. Michael Collins (Dr. Antionette), Stephen Sketchler, Dr. Angela Collins, John Bourgeois (Angélle), Dr. Benjamin Sketchler (Dr. Josie), Dr. Alex Bourgeois (Kyllie Mae), Donald Smith Jr. (Oana), Dr. Danielle Cannon (David “DJ”); great grandchildren: Eva Smith, Jane Smith, Nate Evans, Elise Evans, Louie Evans, Annie Evans, Wayne Cannon; and siblings: Janice V. Dantin (Gerald) and Jerry Vega (Camille).

Mrs. Plaisance was preceded in death by her parents: Alphonse M. Vega and Louisa H. Vega; companion: Alvin Autin; son in law: Donald W. Smith, Sr.; step brother: Johnny Vega (Thelma).

Mercy, “Ma Mere”, loved family gatherings and dressing up and walking the parades during Mardi Gras. There was nothing she couldn’t sew, make or put together and she enjoyed being with her Red Hat family as The Queen Mother. Ma Mere’s faith was admirable and her family was her love; as she would say “JOY – Jesus Others Yourself”.

Mrs. Mercedes family would like to thank Cindy Mayeur, the staff at Lady of the Sea Hospital, and Natalie Curole with St. Joseph Hospice.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, March 27, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cut Off from 10:00 am until service time. Her Funeral Mass will begin at 12 noon with burial following in the Church Cemetery.
