Mary married the love of her life, Wesley Joseph Matherne, on August 20, 1959. They just celebrated 67 years of marriage. They built a family together with love. They had three children: Jimmy, Sandra, and Wes, and welcomed their spouses into the family, which grew to include eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mary was a nurturer, creating a home full of love, joy, and food. As much as she filled her loved ones’ hearts, she always made sure their stomachs were filled too. She absolutely loved to cook, whether it was recipes her mother had passed down, or some new creations she found in her collection of cookbooks. It was mornings of pancakes and French toast after her grandchildren spent the night and holiday feasts, with her gumbo at the center, surrounded by all her family. She and Wesley enjoyed traveling, both together and with their family. Hawaii, Disney World, the Smoky Mountains, Las Vegas and Branson are just a few of their many trips. Mary was always capturing the moment. She covered her walls and filled books with photographs that showed the family she loved so dear. She would light up when she heard “Maw Mary” and never missed a moment to tell them how much she loved and was proud of them. Her legacy of love will continue in our hearts until we meet her again.
