Lawrence “Larry” John Banas passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by those he loved most.
Born on March 8, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Larry was the eldest son of the late Stella Mageria Banas and the late John Alexander Banas. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Civil Engineering and later earned a master’s degree from West Virginia University.
Larry devoted 55 years to his career as a civil engineer and construction superintendent with Union Carbide/Dow Chemical Company. Beginning in Charleston, West Virginia, his work took him to projects in Puerto Rico, Singapore, London, Switzerland, and throughout the United States but it was his assignment in St Charles Parish, Louisiana, that changed the course of his life. It was here he met Sharon, his wife of nearly 45 years. Larry embraced not only Sharon but also her daughters, Rebecca Zeringue Matherne (Mark) and Jeanne Zeringue Oubre, whom he loved and supported throughout their lives.
One of the greatest joys of Larry’s life was becoming "Pappy" to his four grandchildren: Jace Oubre, Abby Matherne, Ella Matherne, and Gabrielle Oubre. He took tremendous pride in their accomplishments and followed every milestone of their educational journeys, always knowing the dates of final exams, semester breaks, and honors announcements.
Larry also enjoyed spending Saturdays on the golf course and Sundays cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints. Following in his father's footsteps, one of his favorite retirement routines was sitting down to play piano each evening.
He is also survived by his favorite golf partner and brother, Kenneth Banas (Marcella), Godchild Danielle Banas, and four-legged nephew Cooper Banas.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Larry's life on Saturday, June 6, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Luling, LA.
