Gertrude "Maw Gert" Matherne

Gertrude “Maw Gert” Matherne, native of Raceland, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church, on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 9:00 am until Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Gert is survived by her loving husband of 73 ½ years, Benjamin “Benny” Matherne; 5 children, Randy (Denise Dantin), Barry (Karen Arceneaux), Karen (David) Authement, Ann (Kenneth) Guidry, Stephanie (Joe) Breaux; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer M. Plaisance (Barry), Ashley M. Adams (Eric), Rebecca M. Wiley (Brad), Ben Matherne, Jesse Matherne, John Authement (Meagan), Abby Authement, Wesley Guidry (Brittany), Corey Guidry (Frazier), Alexa Breaux (Brysen), Colby Breaux (Hannah); 8 great-grandchildren, Parker Adams, Charlie Adams, Noah Wiley, Grace Wiley, Hudson Plaisance, Grayson Guidry, Beckett Guidry, Tripp Authement; brother-in-law, Terry Matherne (Barbara) and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alcest J. Champagne and Edolia Foret Champagne; siblings, Pierre Champagne (Blanche), Irma C. Babin (Alcee), Beatrice C. Monier (Joseph), Emily C. Ledet (Emile Sr.), Johnny Champange (Lolita), Theresa C. Aupied (Yves), Octavia C. Ledet, Vivian C. Adams (Irvin Sr.), Mae Champagne; sister-in-law, Betty Jean Barrios.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, involved in the thrift store and food bank. She loved to volunteer and help others.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at the Suites of Sugar Mill Point and ACG Hospice for all the love and care given to Mrs. Gert.
