Alvin P. Landry

Alvin Paul Landry, 83, born November 24, 1942, in Raceland, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, surrounded by his family. He lived a life defined by faith, devotion to family, service to his community, hard work, and friendship.

Visitation will be held at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church in Mathews on Thursday, August 13th from 9:00 am until service time. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am, with the burial to follow at St. Mary’s Nativity Cemetery in Raceland.

Alvin graduated from Raceland High School in 1960. A gifted mechanic who could build or fix “just about anything,” he opened an auto repair business with his brother Leonard at a young age before moving on to a career refurbishing fire trucks with Five Alarm, a business he started with his brother, friends, and cousins. His skill with his hands was matched by his willingness to use it to help others. If something was broken, Alvin could usually figure out how to fix it—and he was always willing to try.

Deeply rooted in his community, Alvin was a faithful parishioner of St. Hilary Catholic Church in Mathews from the church’s founding in 1965. Early on, he was a volunteer fireman with the Raceland Fire Department. As a member of the Raceland Grand Marshal Club, he was honored as the club’s Grand Marshal in 1989. Later, he was an active member of the Raceland Lions Club and served one term as president.

Alvin loved to fish, loved to laugh, and was known for his good nature, generosity, dependability, and willingness to lend a hand. Above all, he was devoted to his family, especially to Sylvia, his wife of 62 years.

There was something particularly fitting about Alvin’s name. “Alvin” means “loyal friend,” and that is exactly what he was—to his family, his friends, his church, and his community.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Louise Landry. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia; his children, Lynn (David) and Kurt (Elizabeth); and his grandchildren, Reagen, Jacob, Miles, and Audrey.

He leaves behind a family who loved him, a community he served, countless things he built and repaired, and many people who were fortunate enough to call Alvin Landry a loyal friend.

The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Broadway Elder Care and Hope Hospice for the kindness and care they gave Alvin and his family.
