Our History

In the year 1912, Leonard Falgout, Sr., the local general store owner, converted his delivery wagon into a horse drawn hearse to meet the needs of the Raceland Community and thus the Falgout family funeral service business had its beginning.  Over the next 85 years with three generations of family leadership, Falgout Funeral Homes expanded greatly with three modern funeral home facilities in Lafourche Parish and one in Terrebonne Parish. 

After the Great Depression, the second generation, Leonard Falgout, Jr. and Marie Falgout (wife of Milo Meacham, Sr.) were contributing to the success of the family business.  On August 31, 1939 the family opened a new modern funeral home at 3838 Louisiana Highway 1 in Raceland, LA and in 1948 to better serve lower Lafourche, the Marco Picciola residence was purchased and converted into a satellite facility and was further enlarged and remodeled in 1960.

Leonard Falgout, Jr. succeeded his father as President and served his community well until his tragic death in an auto accident in 1969.  Mr. Milo "Pap" Meacham succeeded him as the president and with the assistance of the third generation, Milo Meacham, Jr. and Leonard Falgout, III, the family business continued to expand. 

In 1972 a new funeral home was built in Lockport and in 1978, Falgout purchased the McCleary Funeral Home on Westside Blvd. in Houma, LA expanding into Terrebonne Parish.  Milo Meacham, Jr. followed his father as President.  With the changing of times, the duties of Milo, Jr. became more complexed not only directing the family operations but also dealing with the succession of the family business. 

With no apparent interest from any of the fourth generation, the Falgout family decided to be very selective in their search  for a successor to continue these established services.  Those considered would have to be family oriented and community caring with an excellent reputation and hopefully with ties to the area.  Without any hesitation, it was decided that the Mothe Funeral Homes met these qualifications and more. 

The Mothe family ties started during its third generation with the marriage of Emile J. Mothe, Jr. to Pearl Thibodaux of Bayou Blue, whose father, Wallace Thibodaux, was the great, great, grandnephew of Henry Schuyler Thibodaux who served for a short time as Governor of Louisiana and for whom the town of Thibodaux was named. 

In 1904, Wallace married Mathilde Bourgeois of Bayou Cane and they had five daughters, Lillian, Hattie, Pearl, Beulah, and Betty.  Wallace, a sugar cane farmer, was recognized as a "Master Farmer of Louisiana" in 1928 by Gov. John M. Parker.  He helped establish one room school buildings for education on upper Bayou Blue and served on the Lafourche Parish Police Jury for 40 years, being recognized as a key figure of Francis T. Nicholls College, now a University. 

Lillian, a lifetime school teacher of 44 years on Bayou Blue, married Aubry Naquin, an educator who also retired as principal of Bayou Blue Elementary School.  Hattie married Louis P. LeBlanc, a dentist who with his son Louis enjoy a two generation dental practice in Golden Meadow.  Beulah married Edison Fanguy and they moved to Baton Rouge.  Betty married James Talbot of Algiers.  In 1919, Pearl married Emile J. Mothe, Jr., a third generation funeral director of Algiers.

On October 17, 1997, Mothe Funeral Homes, LLC purchased 100% of Falgout Funeral Homes, Inc.  Today the family heritage is stronger than ever with the direct decendants of the Thibodaux and Bourgeois families, each having 8 siblings.  Many of these family names are active in the communities with the Bourgeois, Broussard, Tabor, Decleuit, Sinor, Worslow, Bonvillian, and Daigle in the Houma area, the Thibodaux, Naquin, Brien, and Usee in the Bayou Blue area, the Paul Lee families in Cut Off and the Louis LeBlanc families in the Golden Meadow area.  Today we are proud to say that Falgout Funeral Homes, LLC has competent management with excellent capabilities and longevity in the community.
